The Zeppelin LZ1 was the first truly successful experimental rigid airship first flown from a floating hangar on Lake Constance near Friedrichshafen in southern Germany at 20:03 on 2 July 1900. LZ stood for Luftschiff Zeppelin or Airship Zeppelin (from the name of its inventor).
