The North American Aviation NA-16 was the first trainer aircraft built by North American Aviation Inc. and was the beginning of a line of North American trainer aircraft that would number more than 17 000 examples.

The Wirraway is a development of the North American NA-16 which was also the basis for the North American T-6 Texan.1
The first prototype, the North American NA-16, which first flew on 1 April 1935, evolved into the AT-6 Texan.2

In 1947 a pattern aircraft of the North American NA-16 was delivered to ASJA, the aircraft department of AB Svenska Järnvägsverkstäderna or Swedish Railway Workshops Limited.4
