Lockheed XFV

The American Lockheed XFV (sometimes referred to as the Salmon) was an experimental tailsitter prototype built by Lockheed to demonstrate the operation of a vertical takeoff and landing fighter for protecting convoys.

As with the Lockheed XFV-1, the Pogo used the Allison YT40-A-14 engine and Curtiss-Wright counter-rotating propellers, but was somewhat more compact and less conventional in appearance.2

The Lockheed XFV most certainly DID both take off and land in the vertical. I personally have seen films of them taking off and landing.14
