The Kawasaki C-1 is a twin-engined short-range military transport used by the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF). Development began in 1966 as the JASDF sought to replace its aging World War II–era C-46 Commandos. Production commenced in 1971 remaining in service as of 2011.

JT8D-M-9, manufactured by Mitsubishi.3
Kawasaki C-1 was designed to replace the C-46. The first prototype
flew on November 12, 1970. The second prototype flew on January 16,
1971.4
Looks like a Kawasaki C-1, which first flew thirty-eight years
ago..and a bit like the McDonnell Douglas YC-15 minus two engines..5

Kawasaki C-1, a Japanese military transport, is powered by the
JT8D-M-9, manufactured by Mitsubishi. Also delivered as JT8D-9A
submodel. Same as -7 except 14,500 lb.7
To replace Kawasaki C-1 and Lockheed Martin C-130H. C-X programme
allocated JPY5.3 billion in FY01 and RFP issued May 2001.8
