The cancellation of the original British supersonic jet programme based on the straight winged Miles M52 immediately after World War II – and the catastrophic failure of the swept wing De Havilland DH 108 Swallow ( based on an English Electric built Vampire fuselage ) - allowed the air-launched rocket propelled American Bell X-1to break the sound barrier for the first time on 14 October 1947 .4
