Benoist XIV

The Benoist XIV was a small biplane flying boat built in the United States in 1913 in the hope of using it to carry paying passengers. The two examples built were used to provide the first heavier-than-air airline service anywhere in the world and the first airline service of any kind at all in the United States.

January 1, 1914, a Benoist XIV flying boat lifted off from the bay front before a cheering crowd and flew the 21 miles across the water to Tampa.1

Jannus piloted a Benoist XIV aircraft from the pier at St. Petersburg, Florida to downtown Tampa, Florida in what usually is regarded as the first scheduled airline flight. His passenger, St.5
